Rallies to Save UMass Student Health Coverage, July 15

Co-Insurance is NO Insurance!!!

The UMass Administration has gutted student health insurance coverage for all undergraduate and graduate students.  Beginning on August 1st, the UMass Administration is changing compulsory student health insurance from 100% coverage for most medical procedures to 85% coverage.  This new plan will push more costs onto women, students with chronic health conditions, students with families, international students and low-income students.  Women who want to be seen for routine gynecological care will have to pay an additional 15% of the cost of that care, and graduate students who are currently pregnant will incur costs up to $5,000 if they deliver their babies after August 1st.

Join other graduate student employees, Graduate Employee Organization members and community activists to call for the UMass Administration to restore comprehensive health care coverage for all students.  We will be supported by members of Mass-Care (the Massachusetts Campaign for Single Payer Health Care), Jobs with Justice, PHENOM, and the Student-Labor Action Project in leafleting at three sites around the Commonwealth on Friday, July 15th– including the Aetna Student Health Corporate Headquarters in Cambridge.

  • Noon-1:00 pm at 1 S. Pleasant St., Amherst (in front of the Bank of America)
  • Noon-1:00 pm at Aetna Student Health, 1 Charles Park, Cambridge
  • 4:00 – 6:00 pm at the corner of Main and Pleasant Streets, downtown Northampton

You can also sign onto a letter to decision-makers on the campuses and at the statehouse by visiting http://uaw2322.org/content/tell-umass-co-insurance-no-insurance .  This letter is crucial to our efforts to let the UMass administration, along with state reps and senators representing the campuses effected, and state reps and senators chairing the MA Joint Committees on Higher Education and Health Care Costs, know that Massachusetts will not accept “co-insurance”.

Coalition of Graduate Employee Union Conference – August 11-14

GEO is sending members to the Coalition of Graduate Employee Unions Conference, taking place in New York City from August 11-14.  If you are a GEO member who would like to attend, contact us at geo@geouaw.org with “CGEU” in the title.  We have a limited number of slots, so get in touch soon.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about the issues facing graduate employees around the U.S. and Canada, and to meet other graduate unionists.
