10/17/19 Membership Meeting took place in Campus Center Room 168 during lunch time 11am – 1pm. The meeting started with an open forum about discussing current affairs that impact our membership. The issue that were discussed were:

  • Supreme Court will interpret the anti-discrimination Civil Rights Act (1964) to mean workers cannot be discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation
  • Chicago Public Teachers’ Strike
  • GM Strike
  • National Labor Relations Board’s proposal support private universities from recognizing grad students as workers
  • Turkish invasion of Syria
  • The situation in Kashmir
  • Protests in Ecuador
  • Autonomy of Hong Kong

The members attending the meeting decided to support a set of actions following the discussion of these issues:

  • Donate $1,000 to Chicago Teachers Union
  • Donate $1,000 to Red Cross in Syria
  • Funds up to $1,000 approved for international student caucus to organize events and invite speakers about the discussed international conflicts

The members also discussed updates on North Village and Lincoln Apartments. They decided donating $ 1000 to the Pioneer Valley Childcare Collective. Their members have been volunteering in events organized by North Village Residents, who are facing attacks from the university. They are afraid that they will be losing their community. In these times, the childcare collective showed solidarity with them and the members of GEO voted on reciprocating in ways that will strengthen the important work that the collective is doing.
