We are writing to share an open letter from the Iranian community at UMass, and endorsed by the GEO membership, in response to the protests in Iran.

The brutal murder of a young Kurdish woman on September 16 ignited an expansive uprising against the Iranian regime’s repulsive gender apartheid and has since evolved into an unprecedented fight for the end of the four-decade-old theocratic dictatorship. The protests have not abated despite severe internet blockades, an all out violent crackdown by security forces using excessive and lethal force, and a growing death toll of hundreds people, including children.

The Iranian community at UMass Amherst addressed this letter to Chancellor Subbaswamy, urging the administration to take a public stance against these violent acts and to act swiftly to ensure that the tragic effects of these events are not compounded by the economic and immigration marginalization of Iranian student communities in the United States.
